Born in 1927, he formed his own band while still in school and in 1949 hit number one with 'Deacon's Hop'. He quickly earned a reputation for playing on top of bars and sometimes even outside of clubs, with one such event leading to his arrest for 'disturbing the peace' while his band remained inside continuing the song until someone could post bail and bring him back to finish. He's shared the stage with countless household names including Bill Haley and His Comets and little Richard, and his biggest hit 'There Is Something On Your Mind' has been covered by B.B.
